Omapodi recipe
Omapodi is a quick and healthy snack liked by kids and elders equally, the main ingredient being omam or ajwain seeds aids in digestion. It can also be called Ompodi , was famous in the 1980s and 90s and most often seen occupying the varisai plates on occasions like betrothal or weddings, and used to resemble a mountain of strings..
This practise of plating omapodi on varisai plates were more popular in villages than in cities, my in-laws brought omapodi as a varisai plate for my engagement from Vellore to Chennai ( we must definitely appreciate the care taken to bring this brittle mountain for 150 kms ) in 2008 August 22 , WOW I remember the date correctly!!! Though not much seen these days in these occasions, people fill most of the varisai plates with fruits , have people gotten lazy or more healthy, ( God only knows ),, ..
Now, Lets quickly get into the recipe of Omapodi aka ompodi !!
Omapodi ingredients:
Besan flour – 2 cups
Rice flour – 1 cup
Omam or ajwain or caraway seeds – 2 tbsp
Oil – to deep fry
salt – 2 tsp
turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
butter – 2 tbsp
water – as needed

1. First, Boil omam in 1 cup of water till it reduces to half cup
2. Next, Mix all ingredients together in a mixing bowl: besan flour, rice flour , salt, turmeric and butter.. Mix well.
3. Then, Add the filtered omam water , with 2 tbsp of hot oil..
4. Finally, Mix well , add water little by little and make a soft and smooth dough.
5. Thereafter, make the dough into logs to fit into the murukku press.
6. Later, fit the omapodi mould with small holes into the murukku press and fill it with the dough.
7. Finally, heat oil and press omapodis directly into the hot oil , cook till its done on one side
8. Then, flip it over and cook both sides well.
9. Later, drain it from the oil and drain the remaining oil on a tissue paper.
10. Finally, your Omapodi is ready to serve!!! Enjoy!!!
