Vazhakkai Puttu | Vazhakkai Podimas | Plantain puttu

Image
Vazhakkai puttu or vazhakkai podimas or raw banana podimas is a quick and easy recipe. This is similar to potato puttu. It is a good accompaniment to rice with sambar and rasam. It is a great combination with vathakuzhambu also. This can be quickly made with simple ingredients that are easily available. My mother makes the best vazhakkai fry , by slow roasting in an iron skillet. My kids and husband are fans of the vazhakkai fry that my mom prepares. But I am so lazy to do it that way, it needs a lot of time. Someday I will learn the exact way my mom does it and post it here too. But I usually prefer to do puttu with vazhakkai instead of frying it. Now my son and hubby have started to like my puttu also. Happy me 🙂 Here is my recipe for Vazhakkai Puttu: Recipe Cuisine: South Indian | Recipe Category: Sidedish | Serves: 2 to 3 Prep Time: 10 mins | Cook time: 20 mins | Total time: 30 mins Ingredients: Vazhakkai / Raw Banana – 2 medium sized Onion – 1 big Green Chillies – 3 Turmeric powd...

Mint Chutney | Pudhina Thovayal

Image
Mint chutney or Pudhina Thovayal is a nice side dish for idly and dosa. Mint has a lot of health benefits. It is rich in Vitamins A and C, calcium and iron. It is good for the digestive system, and is also rich in anti-oxidants. So we should try to include it in our food often. Whenever I get fresh mint leaves, I use the leaves and save the stem for planting. I just put the stems in a glass of water. After a week, it will start to grow roots. Then, it can be transplanted to a planting pot. But I just leave it in the glass of water and replace with fresh water once in a week. It still grows in the water glass indoors.  And I get fresh mint leaves whenever needed 🙂 Here is my recipe for mint chutney Recipe Cuisine: Indian | Recipe Category: Sidedish Prep Time: 5 mins | Cook time: 15 mins | Total time: 20 mins | Serves: 3 Ingredients: Fresh Pudhina / Mint leaves – 1 cup tightly packed Channa dal / Kadala parupu – 2 tbsp Urad dal / ulundhu – 2 tbsp Garlic  – 5 small cloves or 2 b...

Chicken Biriyani

Image
Chicken Biriyani is a term that brings smile on the face of me and my family. LOL 😀 No other food can give me the happiness and satisfaction of eating chicken biriyani. I believe you too have the same feeling. I have got lot of praises for my chicken biriyani. Once I made chicken biriyani for an International Food Festival and many foreigners also liked it, and I heard they recommended others to also try my chicken biriyani 😀 and many Indians identified it as typical South Indian style of biriyani and Many people bought it again and again and some of them also came back after it got over . I was really really happy that day. This is a easy one pot biriyani recipe, though it is easy it takes time to prepare it. Atleast an hour. But while it is being half done the aroma fills the house and kindles the hunger in everyone’s tummy. Once it is ready, the cooker takes the center position and the whole family sits around it and the cooker takes several rounds and serves us all till the tummy...

Tandoori Chicken

Image
Tandoori Chicken is something I never thought that can be done at home. We have enjoyed it only in restaurants. But first time gave it a try at home and it came out so so gooood. It was soft and juicy but it missed the smokey smell of tandoor. I made it using my oven at home. It was delicious in taste and texture. It is such a simple recipe anybody can do it, but it needs planning. We need to plan it the day before , to marinate and refrigerate the chicken in the spice mix with yoghurt. Next day, it just needs to be baked. And your crispy , soft and juicy tandoori chicken will be ready to be enjoyed.  Lets get on to the making of Tandoori Chicken.     Recipe Cuisine: Indian | Recipe Category: Starter Prep Time: 20 mins | Cook time: 60 mins | Total time: 1 hr 20 mins | Serves: 4 to 5 Ingredients for Tandoori Chicken : Chicken – 1 kg Yoghurt – half cup Ginger Garlic paste – quarter cup Tandoori masala – 2 tsp Chilly powder – 2 tsp salt – as per taste turmeric powder ...

Vadacurry is a special south indian dish , a great combo with idly and dosa. I prepare it on special occasions or when we have guests at home, or if we just want to eat something special 😀 Vadacurry is ideally made with masala vadai crumbled in an onion tomato base. Its main ingredient is chana dal or kadala parupu, ground to a semi fine texture and either steam cooked or roasted on a dosa tava and then added to the gravy. I learnt this recipe from my ” Sandhya maami” who is really a great cook , I wish to learn more recipes from her. My hubby likes this vada curry and often requests to prepare it. Idly Milagai Podi is an all time favorite side dish for idly & dosa. I can eat it with idlies anytime of the day. Idly milagai podi is basically a dry powder made with roasted lentils and chilly. Can be mixed with ghee or sesame oil for great taste, or can be mixed with any cooking oil.   My son and I can have idly with idly milagai podi even three times in a day 🙂 We like it so much .. Though my husband is not a great fan of podi, as he does not like dry food stuff. But I always have stock of this. I enjoy having it mixed with rice too.
